About Me

Barbara James, E-RYT500, is known for her compassion, passion and creativity in teaching.  Her alignment-based vinyasa classes are supportive, innovative and inspiring.  Barbara believes in the potency of yoga and mindfulness practices to promote and maintain health and wellness.  She encourages breath awareness, mindful movement, and honoring one’s own limits.  Besides vinyasa flow, she loves teaching foundational practices to beginners, partner yoga and yin.  Most of all Barbara loves taking her yoga off the mat, and frequently combines her teaching with fundraising opportunities for charities and local causes.

Barbara’s yoga journey began in 2000, when she tried yoga to lose some stress-induced weight. Intrigued by the variety, beauty and challenge of the yoga poses, she was quickly hooked.  It was the transformative power of yoga, however, that kept her coming back to her mat, particularly the equilibrium she felt during times of high stress.

Wanting to share her love of yoga with others through teaching, Barbara began teaching yoga to friends in 2004.  She received a Vinyasa Flow certification from the Asheville Yoga Center in 2005, and a year later completed her 200-hour certification with the Bodhi Tree in Charlotte.  In 2010 she received her 500-hour certification through the Asheville Yoga Center.  Barbara has a certificate of completion in Yoga of Awareness for Cancer from Duke Integrative Medicine, and has attended two silent meditation retreats with Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Barbara completed in May, 2016, an additional 300-hour yoga teacher training in therapeutic elements to improve health and wellbeing with Subtle Yoga in Asheville, NC; she is excited to share therapeutic essentials in her teaching. Through teacher trainings and workshops she’s had the pleasure of learning from excellent teachers including Scott Blossom, Kimberly Carson, Angela Farmer, Rolf Gates, Gabriel Halpern, David Keil, Gary Kraftsow, Carol Krucoff, Michael Stone, and Cora Wen.  And she holds a special place in her heart for her teachers Kris Lawson Loomis, Lesa Crocker, Stephanie Keach and Kristine Kaoverii Weber.  Barbara is a member of both the Yoga Alliance and the International Association of Yoga Therapists.

Barbara was one of the original teachers to teach in Rock Hill, SC’s first yoga studio, and when the studio closed early in 2009 Barbara created "Barbara James Yoga” as a way to keep the yoga momentum alive in Rock Hill.  Barbara James Yoga is proud of its part in growing the yoga community in Rock Hill, and proud of its support of local charities.  From 2009 - 2012 Barbara James Yoga gave more than $7,000 to Pilgrim’s Inn and Feed the Hungry.  Barbara James Yoga has also sponsored several "yoga mala” fundraisers, raising in three Malas for the Isabel Jurado Foundation over $14,000, and approximately $6,500 in two  Malas for Feed the Hungry.

In 2012 Barbara helped get a second yoga studio in Rock Hill off the ground by moving her classes there.  Now that the studio is successful, she’s returned to independent teaching. She’s recently created Living Yoga, LLC with her best friend and fellow yoga teacher Debra Young, to offer mindfulness-based workshops, retreats and teacher training. www.livingyoga4peace.com
